Banco De Oro (BDO) Bank
Banco De Oro (BDO) for me is the leading bank in the Philippines. With 1,000+ branches throughout the country. Most mall branches are open on Saturdays and Sundays. This what I like about BDO. They find ways to serve their customers better. In fact, I have 2 accounts with them, savings and current account. The savings account I have earns a small monthly interest less tax. I have also tried various products of BDO before like loan and checking account. The bank branches’ staff and officers are always dressed up properly, professionally and I really like the color of their uniform – dark blue. When you enter, the guards will greet you and at the counter when you approach the front liners, they will greet you as well with a smile. They are very accommodating. Account verification can also be done over the phone. Because of the pandemic, it is always good to just stay at home. So I just dialed the number, talk to the front liner, I provided my account number and then answered a few verification questions, and then the front liner gave me the information I need. Basically, to determine if the funds I was expecting to be deposited to my account went through. Their head office is located in Ortigas, along ADB Avenue, beside Podium mall. I went there several times already. It’s a newly constructed building. I think it was built last 2017. That’s where their HQ operation is and where most of their employees are working. They also have offices in Greenhills San Juan and Makati. Some of my friends I know word in BDO before and they were thankful that they became part of the BDO family. They left because they found a better opportunity outside BDO.
This bank has branches not only in the Philippines but also in a few countries to serve mostly their Filipino clients who are working abroad. They have branches in Hong Kong, Singapore and other BDO branches abroad. They have various products and services for their clients. Primarily savings account for their hard-earned money. They also do roadshows and caravan as their marketing initiatives.
BDO remit is their remittance service that is so competitive in terms of service fees as compared to other remittance companies that allows remitters to send money from abroad inward to the Philippines. The BDO remit service allows their remitters or clients abroad to send money cross-border. I’m not sure though if this service is also available for other countries other than the Philippines as the destination country.
The traction for the Kabayan savings product. This product of BDO serves most of the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). They advertise this and hired known artists and personalities to create hype and get Filipino clients to use this product. I believe that this gained a lot of tractions and their campaign for this went very well.
In 2018, and below, they don’t have gang chairs while clients are in queue. I think, the main reason for this is because the management wants to prove to their clients that their front liners act so fast that clients would only wait for a couple of minutes. But, what is happening on the ground is contrary to this belief. Many clients are complaining about this, I was one of them by the way, because the reality was, clients are waiting for more than 30 minutes, worst more than an hour of waiting. In 2019, I think they starter to put chairs so clients are not standing while in queue waiting for their turn. Other clients also have negative comments like the guards are too strict. Clients inside the branch are not allowed to use their phone inside the bank branch premises. Even if you are just playing games, at times, the guards will call your attention and will tell you to stop using your phone. We’ll this is a policy for all banks in the Philippines, I think also abroad. The BDO slogan is ‘we find ways’. Find ways for what? For the betterment of BDO’s service? Or for them to become profitable? I think it is a balance between these two perspectives so that they would keep their clients satisfied with their services while getting their income pouring in to their way. In my own experience, I am satisfied overall with the services they provided except for the queue especially during opening and closing time at their branches. Locations of their branches have also been cherry picked and for me are the high foot traffic locations that usually are very accessible for their clients.
Nevertheless, I would still recommend this bank if you are after for integrity and accessibility.
